Emma: An Honest Review
I recently ordered the Emma Original Super Single (SS) Mattress and have compiled my thoughts to share with all of you! Honestly, of course.
I slept on the mattress for over three weeks before writing this review. All opinions offered are in relation to a fully settled Emma Original mattress. Before diving in, let’s first break down the product’s four distinct layers.
1. The Cover
The Emma Original cover is removable and easy to wash. In addition, it is relatively thin, meaning that it will fit into smaller washing machines. The fabric is soft to the touch, almost as if it were an additional blanket.
2. Temperature Regulating Foam
The top layer of foam uses the groundbreaking technology of Airgocell foam®. This enhances breathability and regulates temperature by absorbing and then evaporating sweat. Humid summers in Korea make us all work up a sweat, but Airgocell® dissipates moisture and heat, ensuring a comfortable sleep experience.
3. Physique Support
The next layer is made up of memory foam, which provides optimal spinal support. In addition, this foam helps to alleviate joint pain while also adapting to the natural curves of the body. Finally, it helps to limit motion transfer, allowing undisturbed sleep.
4. Spine Alignment
The base layer of the mattress includes High Resiliency Extra (HRX), which provides counterpressure for the body. This layer is designed with seven zone cutouts that help keep the spine evenly aligned for maximum relief and recovery, no matter the sleeping position.

Step 1: Unboxing
Unboxing the Emma Original Super Single Mattress is an exciting experience, to say the least. Firstly, you’ll be asked to schedule your delivery date and time to best suit your schedule. The mattress will be delivered directly to your door in a vacuum-packed state. Whether you live on the ground or top floor, Emma’s delivery team will ensure that the package arrives right to your doorstep.
Thanks to vacuum sealing technology, the mattress is also neatly compressed. This makes it easy to move inside, open, and set up all on your own. The box itself is not excessively heavy or bulky, making it convenient to maneuver in tight spaces such as a small bedroom.
The first thing you’ll notice inside is a clear set of instructions. Emma goes the extra mile by providing a safety-covered cutting knife specifically designed to slice through the thick plastic wrapping. This is essential for a quick unboxing. What’s more, the safety cover makes the risk of piercing your new mattress extremely unlikely. As you remove the plastic, the mattress will begin to expand and form its final shape. Resist the temptation to jump on it until it has completely settled; I know it’s hard!
Emma mattresses typically take half a day to fluff up to their optimal form. Keeping this in mind, I strongly recommend a morning delivery in order to sleep on the mattress that same evening.
Sleeping on the Mattress
Being single and living in a small apartment, I opted for the Emma Original SS mattress. This mattress measures 120 cm × 200 cm (47 in × 79 in), which hits the sweet spot between spacious and compact.
Like all Emma mattresses, the SS Original has a multi-layer construction that starts with a breathable soft top cover, followed by a layer of pressure-relieving memory foam. This is perfect for contouring to your body’s unique shape and honestly feels akin to sleeping on a cloud. The core of the mattress uses adaptive foam that supports the spine’s alignment. The final layer is added for the overall stability of the mattress and any additional support needed. Considering I often sleep on the floor in traditional Korean homes as a travel writer, a supportive base is essential when I finally make my way back home.
Overall, I love this mattress. At first, I wasn’t sure if a softer mattress was the right fit for me. However, after sleeping on the mattress for nearly a month, I can safely say that my insomniac patterns are quickly dissolving. I wake up every morning feeling refreshed as if the softness of the mattress were a puffy fortress keeping me from tossing and turning.
Another feature I can’t help but mention again is the removable cover. Considering the summers in Korea are so hot, the removable and washable cover is ideal. Not to mention late-night wine spills, pet accidents, and other life happenings that require a speedy route to the washing machine. The zipper makes removal easy, and the overall thinness makes it easy to chuck the cover into smaller washing machines.
Although the SS mattress was the perfect size for me, you may be wondering how to choose the right mattress size. Emma strongly recommends a SS/Queen mattress for single parties, particularly those living in smaller apartments in Korea. For a couple or those more prone to tossing and turning, Queen/King size mattresses are recommended. If you feel that you’ve purchased the wrong size, the Emma Promise offers a 100-day trial, a 10-year warranty, and free delivery service with a hassle-free return system.
Emma’s Future in Korea
Recognizing the growing demand for healthier sleep patterns in a society as hardworking as South Korea, Emma: The Sleep Company made the wise decision to expand its operations to the peninsula. Known for its advanced technology and a strong emphasis on physical health, South Korea is an ideal market for affordable, high-quality mattresses. In fact, Emma has already won numerous awards in Korea since its debut here in 2020.
2022 Korea Consumer Best Brand Award
2021 Korea Consumer Award
2020 Korea Best New Product Awards
Like all countries offering Emma products, Korea upholds the standards of the Emma Promise: a 100-day trial period, a 10-year warranty, and a free delivery process. This is ideal considering most mattress companies in South Korea don’t offer free shipping.
Emma is also dedicated to shipping anywhere in the country, not only Seoul. Whether you live in Daejeon, Busan, or even hard-to-reach places like Sokcho, Emma will securely deliver straight to your door. In addition, Apple Pay is a secure payment method for those living in Korea who do not have local cards available for online purchases. For those who have additional questions or concerns, agents are available for support in a number of languages.
